The National Institute of Technology Calicut (NIT Calicut), one of India's premier technical institutions and an Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Education, has announced an excellent opportunity for fresh graduates, diploma holders, and ITI pass-outs through its Apprenticeship Training Program for the academic year 2026-27. This recruitment initiative, facilitated through the Centre for Continuing Education and Skill Development (CCESD), aims to engage 50 apprentice trainees across multiple disciplines under the provisions of the Apprentices Act, 1961.
NIT Calicut, officially known as National Institute of Technology Calicut, is a public technical university located in Kozhikode (Calicut), Kerala. Established in 1961 as one of the Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) and later upgraded to National Institute of Technology status in 2002, NITC has earned a reputation for academic excellence, research innovation, and holistic development of students. The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in various engineering, science, and management disciplines.
This apprenticeship program represents a golden opportunity for young professionals to gain practical, hands-on experience in a premier academic and research institution. The training period is fixed at one year (12 months), during which apprentices will be assigned to various departments, laboratories, libraries, healthcare facilities, and administrative units of NIT Calicut. This exposure will not only enhance their technical and professional skills but also provide them with invaluable insights into the functioning of a world-class educational institution.
The recruitment advertisement, bearing reference number NITC/CCESD/NATS/AT/2026/001 dated 24 January 2026, invites applications for three categories of apprentice positions: Graduate Apprentice Trainees (for candidates with professional degree qualifications such as M.Lib.I.Sc, B.Sc Nursing, B.Pharm, etc.), Diploma Apprentice Trainees (for diploma holders in engineering and technical fields), and Trade Apprentice Trainees (for ITI certificate holders in various trades).
What makes this opportunity particularly attractive is the stipend structure. Graduate apprentices will receive a monthly stipend ranging from Rs. 9,000 to Rs. 12,000 depending on their qualification level, diploma apprentices will get Rs. 8,000 per month, and trade apprentices (ITI holders) will receive Rs. 7,000 per month. Although the stipend may seem modest compared to regular employment, the value lies in the comprehensive training, certification under the Apprentices Act, and the prestigious association with NIT Calicut, which significantly enhances future employment prospects.
The apprenticeship training covers diverse fields including Library and Information Science, Hotel Management, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology, Pharmacy, and various engineering trades. This diversity ensures that candidates from different educational backgrounds can find suitable opportunities aligned with their qualifications and career aspirations. The training is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired during formal education and practical skills required in professional settings.
Candidates must possess the prescribed educational qualifications with a minimum of 60% marks in their qualifying examination. For graduate apprentices, professional degrees from recognized universities are mandatory, while diploma and ITI apprentices must have completed their respective programs from government-recognized institutions. The age limit varies by category, and reservations are applicable as per Government of India norms for SC/ST/OBC/PwD and other eligible categories.
The application process is completely online through the official NIT Calicut website. Interested candidates must submit their applications on or before 09 February 2026 at 05:00 PM. There is no application fee for this recruitment, making it accessible to all eligible candidates regardless of their economic background. The selection process is transparent and merit-based, involving shortlisting based on academic performance followed by document verification and possible written tests or interviews depending on the number of applications received.
Upon successful completion of the one-year apprenticeship training, candidates will be awarded a Certificate of Apprenticeship Training as per the Apprentices Act, 1961. This certificate is recognized across India and adds significant value to the candidate's resume, improving employability in both public and private sector organizations. Many apprentices from previous batches have successfully secured regular employment in reputed organizations or pursued higher education after gaining this practical experience.
